So Potra était suspendu de vol depuis déjà deux mois quand il bombarda le palais présidentiel le 17 Mars 1973. Alors qu'il fréquentait une fille du Prince Sihanouk, il avait été signalé comme instable. En plus de sa suspension, il fut affecté à la base de Ream qui, à l'époque, n'avait pas d'unités d'attaques (T-28). Etrangement, au cours de cette période, So Potra fut demandé par les américains pour faire un stage avec eux au Sud-Vietnam! Nous avions accepté. Le jour du bombardement, il était à la base de Pochentong et était habillé en combinaison de vol. Il réussit à déjouer l'attention d'un mécanicien qui terminait juste vérifier un T-28 prêt pour une mission. Deux T-28 furent envoyés l'intercepter mais il n'était plus sur le ciel de Phnom-Penh et était déjà en direction d'une zone communiste.

So Potra was suspended from flying for already two months when he bombed the presidential palace on March 17, 1973. He had been reported as unstable while he was seeing a daughter of Prince Sihanouk. In addition to his suspension, he was assigned to Ream AFB. At that time, no T-28 squadron was based at Ream. Strangely, during that period, So Potra was request by the Americans and sent to a US base in South Vietnam for a special training! The day of the bombardment, he was at Pochentong AFB and was dressed in flying suit. He managed to elude the attention of a mechanic who just finished checking a T-28 ready for a mission. Two T-28s were sent to intercept So Potra but it was too late. He already headed to enemies territories.
